New Developments in Child Death
Investigation
February 17, 2007
By Walt McClure
Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno is
calling for hearings and a thorough review of the circumstances of
13-year old Jonathan Carey's death, allegedly at the hands of two
aides who had taken him on an outing.
Those two aides from the Oswald D.
Heck Center in Niskayuna are facing manslaughter charges for
allegedly using deadly physical force to restrain the boy.
Jonathan Carey's parents are
joining Senator Bruno in talking tough, saying their cries for help
fell on deaf ears.
In a statement released by their
lawyer, Michael and Lisa Carey said, “Jonathan's death is not only
untimely and unnecessary, it is tragic because those to whom we have
pled for reform have not heeded us...we state that now is the
critical hour, now is the time for change in the system which failed
to protect jonathan, and disrespected our son's basic rights.”
Those basic rights were allegedly
disrespected when, while on an outing from the O.D. Heck
Developmental Center in Niskayuna to Crossgates Mall, aide Edwin
Tirado allegedly restrained the boy till he stopped breathing, then
Tirado and driver Nadeem Mall drove around for another couple of
hours with an unconscious Jonathan without seeking medical
treatment.
Sen. Joseph Bruno/R-Majority
Leader: “We have to get the facts first and then we're going to get
accountability in these facilities, transparency in these
facilities.”
Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno is
calling for hearings and a thorough investigation into the situation
to make needed changes to the system, like making sure parents get
reports on what goes on in their children's treatment.
Sen. Joseph Bruno: “We don't want
to in any way indict the system because most of the people that are
there are as I say caring and sharing their lives with the people
they're treating, but if there are one or two people there not
properly trained, we need to know it.”
Autopsy results on Jonathan Carey
have not been released yet.
Nadeem Mall and Edwin Tirado are
being held without bail at the Albany County Jail.
