www.news10now.com They were supposed to be in bed, but police and school officials say a group of kids plotted their escape from the Academy at Ivy Ridge. "At approximately 10:30 pm a group of students created a disturbance in the facility causing criminal mischief to several areas in the building and injuring staff members," said Captian David Chauvin, NY State Police. Ivy Ridge is a boarding school for troubled teens. The teens live at the academy for about a year, and it's sometimes months before they can see or talk to their families. Late last night a student pulled the fire alarm to alert others it was time to make their break. A group of about 30 students made their way from the dorms to the kitchen area, where they broke windows and light bulbs and used fire extinguishers to make their escape. Eight people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. At one time as many as 15 students escaped from the campus. All of them were rounded up within a few hours. "Just as I got here there was a call from across the road from the school that there were two over there trying to get into a house over there, so I went over there and picked up two more," said Sheriff Gary Jarvis, St. Lawrence County. School officials say security is already pretty tight, but they're going to keep a closer eye on the students following Monday night’s incident. "It's a secure facility, and everyone's a night watcher in position. We'll definitely have more staff on tonight and probably for the next few nights to make sure everything is settled down and make sure the kids are safe," said Jason Finlison, Academy Ridge director. School officials say they've notified the parents of the students who were arrested and injured. Ten students are charged in connection with the disturbance. The charges range from disorderly conduct to assault. As many as 30 students face expulsion from the school.
