A Middletown man who was working with abused and dependent adolescents at a Mansfield hospital has been arrested in Ohio, after arranging to have sex with a minor he met on the Internet, an Ohio detective said.

Instead of meeting a 14-year-old Ohio girl Saturday, John Dobrowolski was greeted by Massillon police who arranged the rendezvous.

Dobrowolski, 59, is charged with attempted unlawful sex with a minor, and two counts of solicitation of a minor using a telecommunications device.

At the time of his arrest, Dobrowolski was a third-shift supervisor at Natchaug Hospital in Mansfield. The hospital is a 54-bed private inpatient facility that provides care to about 400 children and adolescents with serious emotional problems. Many of the youth there are wards of the state sent by the state Department of Children and Families.

Natchaug Hospital President Stephen Larcen said Tuesday that Dobrowolski was fired Monday after the hospital learned of his arrest. Dobrowolski passed a criminal background check prior to his employment, Larcen said. He worked at the hospital for two years, mainly in a residential treatment program for girls that is staffed 24 hours a day, Larcen said.

"We have no evidence that any girl was victimized here," Larcen said. "Will we look into this and cooperate with DCF? Absolutely. That is our duty."

Larcen noted that there were no prior complaints about Dobrowolski's performance before his arrest over the weekend. Dobrowolski has a master's degree in education, Ohio police said.

DCF spokesman Gary Kleeblatt said Tuesday that the agency has opened an investigation and is checking to make sure none of the department's clients or any other children at Natchaug were ever engaged in improper relationships with Dobrowolski.

Dobrowolski, arraigned Monday in Massillon Municipal Court, was being held at Stark County Jail with bail set at $500,000.

Massillon Police Det. Bobby Grizzard, noting the arrest was made in conjunction with a federal sting, said it's likely the state's charges against Dobrowolski would be dropped if he is charged under federal statutes.

"I would anticipate it will be later in the week," Grizzard said Tuesday.

Grizzard said Dobrowolski, had communicated with an undercover officer for three weeks on America Online.

Dobrowolski arranged to meet a person he thought was the girl at the YMCA in neighboring Navarre, Ohio. He surrendered to police without incident, the detective said.
