Bush: no idea when Anderson investigation will conclude

October 17, 2006

TALLAHASSEE – Gov. Jeb Bush said this morning that there is no indication when an investigation into the January death of 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson at a Panama City boot camp will conclude.

“They’re still working hard,” Bush said.
Special prosecutor Mark Ober updated Bush’s legal office this morning, but there was nothing new to report. Meanwhile, a $40 million federal lawsuit filed against the state by the teenager’s family is set for trial on April 16.

“I’d like to see Mark Ober’s investigation be complete and the civil trial will go on independent of that,” Bush said.

Anderson collapsed on the first day of his confinement after guards shoved and kicked him, an incident that was captured on videotape. An initial autopsy blamed Anderson’s death on complications from sickle cell anemia.

A subsequent autopsy attributed the death to suffocation after guards forced ammonia capsules into his nostrils while covering his mouth.

Bush spokesman Anthony DeLuise said the governor’s office continues to receive weekly updates from Ober's office. Before today, the last one was last Wednesday, he said.
