Three investigations into teen's death

August 26, 2006

Three separate investigations are being launched after a 17-year-old died in the custody of the Corrections Department.

Liam Ashley died in Auckland Hospital yesterday morning after being found injured and unconscious in a private security van at Mt Eden Prison on Thursday night.

He had been taken with other prisoners to the jail's remand centre, after appearing in North Shore District Court on charges of car conversion.

The police have revealed 13 other prisoners were being transported in the Chubb security van, but only two are being treated as suspects.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Kramer says the police have been speaking with staff at the jail and the security firm, as well as interviewing the other prisoners.

He says the van was divided up into secure sections.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kramer says the police have been in contact with Mr Ashley's family, and they are expressing anger at the corrections system.

The Corrections Department has launched its own investigation, and says the death will also be the subject of a Coroner's inquest.

The Corrections Department says deaths in custody are rare and it has passed on its deepest sympathies to the victim's family.

It says, as with all such deaths, the Department's Inspectorate will investigate.
