Civic Center presents ‘Everybody Loves Opal’

A middle age recluse living in a decrepit mansion near the city dump has faith in her fellow beings.

The Fremont Civic Theater will present “Everybody Loves Opal” at 7 p.m. April 21-22, April 28-29, and at 3 p.m. April 23 and 30 at Royal Peak Academy, 615 Pike Ave. in Cañon City.

Written by John Patrick, the play centers around Opal, who enjoys collecting whatever she can bring home in her little red wagon. But whatever happens, she is optimistic and grateful. Even when three crooks show up to take advantage of her.

“Three crooks ... decide to get rich off of (Opal) by killing her and getting insurance on her,” said director Nancy Fenyves.

But it isn’t as easy as it looks. Opal apparently lives a charmed life.

“Basically, it’s a show where good conquers bad,” Fenyves said.

Kate Colby is cast as Opal with Mark Rudnik, Paul Goetz and Terri Stultz playing the three criminals and Greg Mortensen the policeman.

Tanya Gatlin is the producer with Joy Freda as the assistant director and appearing in the play as the doctor.

FCT members said when they learned the school had been purchased for the Royal Peak Academy, they contacted Royal Peak Academy Program Manager Randall Hinton and Royal Peak Academy Vice President Brian Lemons.

“They’ve been really, really good to us,” Fenyves said. “They’re really community minded.”

The cast said they were happy to be back in the theater.

“When we walked in the first night, it was like we were home again,” Fenyves said. “We’ve struggled for so long. This is just the first of many more (plays) to come.”

Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students and seniors and may be purchased at Safeway in Cañon City, Fox Den and Fremont Art Guild Gifts and Fine Arts in Florence.
