Lawmakers Pledge To Correct Youth Lock-Up Flaws

Some lawmakers are not happy that no one at the Alexander Youth Services Center has been disciplined over lapses that preceded a teen-ager's death at the youth lockup. A legislative committee heard yesterday from state Department of Human Services officials who outlined plans to correct procedural failures before the death of 17 year old Lakeisha Brown.

Corrective action planned after Brown's April ninth death includes stronger medical protocols, closer observation of children with medical complaints and appropriate treatment.

Brown, who was from Osceola, died after a blood clot moved into her lungs. An internal investigation by the Division of Youth Services suggested that medical personnel and others may not have responded properly to the girl's complaints that she was ill.
