Highfields officials are gearing
up to reopen. Staff at the youth treatment facility are going
through extensive training after allegations of abuse forced the
center to close four months ago. Before teens come back to
Highfields, the staff there is logging some serious classroom hours.
Larry Miesner, Highfields
interim president: "We are providing double the training required."
That means new employees must
now go through 80 hours of training, and all supervisor staff must
sit through at least 120 hours.
Larry Miesner: "Thats a lot of
training."
In February, judges pulled teens
from Highfields after claims of physical abuse, and phase one of the
training may keep those claims from ever happening again.
Larry Miesner: "We are trying as
infrequently as possible not to get in physical control of acting
out youth."
Larry Miesner is interim
president of Highfields. He believes the increase training will
change the camps' perception.
Larry Miesner: "The last thing
we want to have is a boot camp approach."
Those who sat through part of
the training believe the long hours will help.
Larry Miesner: "It's adding to
our information basis so we can deal with the kids when they come
back. The training has been going great. We are excited to be back."
In just a few days, kids will be
back at Highfields, and Mienser hopes the extra training will keep
them here until there fit to go home.
