Tampa,
Florida -
The parents
of 14-year
old Martin
Lee Anderson
got plenty
of support
from the
pastor at
Without
Walls
International
Church on
Sunday
night. Both
Gina Jones
and Robert
Anderson
declined to
talk, but
had their
attorneys
and a
private
pathologist
speak for
them.
Benjamin
Crump,
Attorney for
Family:
"The
manner in
which that
child was
taken away
from them is
just
outrageous
and we are
here in
Tampa to
demand
justice."
Videotape
shows
Anderson
being struck
by guards at
a Panama
City boot
camp. The
medical
examiner
later ruled
the teenager
died of
sickle cell
trait.
Anderson's
family
disputes the
autopsy
results.
Benjamin
Crump,
Attorney for
Family:
"If he
wouldn't
have made
that
outrageous
finding of
sickle cell
trait the
whole world
would not
have been
wound up
like they
are."
Anderson's
body was
exhumed from
a Panama
City
cemetery and
transported
to
Hillsborough
County for a
second
autopsy. The
family asked
well known
pathologist
Dr. Michael
Baden to
perform a
third
autopsy, if
needed.
Dr.
Michael
Baden,
Pathologist:
"I'm
certain the
death of
Martin Lee
Anderson
will lead to
important
good things
that will
benefit lots
of people."
Attorneys
say the boot
camp billed
the
financially
strained
family more
than $25,000
for their
son's
medical
expenses.
Benjamin
Crump,
Attorney for
Family:
"You saw
the video
tape you saw
how he died
and we think
it's insult
to injury to
send a
medical bill
to pay for
it."
But the
church is
offering
some money.
Pastor
Randy White,
Without
Walls
International
Church:
"We're
going to
present to
you a check
for
$15,000."
Both Gina
and Robert
were
overcome
with tears.
During the
service,
Rev. Jesse
Jackson
telephoned
in support.
Activists
say
authorities
at the boot
camp should
be held
accountable.
Benjamin
Crump,
Attorney for
Family:
"What do
you think
should
happen to
the guards
involved in
this?
Clearly we
think that
nobody
should be
above the
law."
The boot
camp says it
was just
trying to
restrain
Anderson.
The autopsy
takes place
at 9 AM on
Monday.
Attorneys
say it will
take around
four hours.
Afterwards
Anderson's
parents will
decide if
Baden will
need to
conduct a
third
autopsy at a
local
funeral
home.
