Governor To Sign Bill Replacing Boot Camps
(CBS4/AP)
TALLAHASSEE Governor Jeb Bush
says he will sign the Martin Lee
Anderson Act into law Wednesday
replacing the state's controversial boot
camp program for at-risk children with a
new alternative.Anderson died following a violent altercation with guards at the Bay County juvenile boot camp in January.
The legislation will replace Florida's old juvenile boot camp system with a successful program used in Martin County.
State lawmakers set aside more than 10 (m) million dollars for the new boot camps, which will be called the Sheriff's Training and Respect program.
Governor Bush credits Representative Gus Barreiro (bah-RAY'-roh) of Miami Beach and several sheriffs for spearheading the new boot camps.
He says the death of the 14-year-old boy is a tragedy and the state should learn from past lessons.
