Sheriff's office inundated with calls

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - College students flooded the Bay County Sheriff's Office phone lines today.

They demanded the former supervisor of a boot camp where a teenager was hit, kicked and struck by guards hours before his death lose his job.

The calls promoted an angry response from Sheriff Frank McKeithen. He issued a press release today, saying the Bay County Sheriff's Office does not have time for their foolishness and telephone games.

McKeithen said his office received 120 calls from Florida State University, Florida A-and-M University and Tallahassee Community College students. The students read a prepared statement demanding McKeithen fire former Bay County Juvenile Boot Camp supervisor Captain Mike Thompson.

Florida State's student center president says the students decided on the phone strategy after McKeithen rejected a request from Governor Jeb Bush to fire Thompson.
