Youth Counselor Convicted Of Child Neglect

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A youth counselor who decided to grab a camera instead of helping a teenager in trouble has been convicted of child neglect.

Sandra Trotter In June 2000, Sandra Trotter (pictured) found Anthony Dumas, 15, trying to commit suicide by hanging himself at the Lippman Youth Center in Oakland Park. Rather than help him down, Trotter took pictures and waited for police.

Dumas remained in a coma for four months and later died. Even with Wednesday's guilty verdict, alternate juror Kerry King said she doesn't agree.

"Reasonable doubt that she was negligent -- that it was negligence because none of the witnesses proved the state's case," King said.

The rest of the jury thought the state's case was convincing. Trotter will be sentenced on April 23.
