Mom Admits To Suffocating Son In Homeless Shelter

December 14, 2006
(AP) St. Paul

A 23-year-old mother pleaded guilty to second degree unintentional murder on Thursday for suffocating her 22-month-old son when he refused to take a nap at a Maplewood homeless shelter.

Triena Diane Wofford will be sentenced Jan. 30 in Ramsey County District Court. Minnesota sentencing guidelines call for 12 years in prison.

Last spring, Wofford, her husband and her six children moved from Dayton, Ohio, to the Twin Cities.

On May 1, her son, Jeremiah, died of asphyxiation and possibly choking after his pregnant mother pinned him face down on a bed, a criminal complaint said. The boy also suffered bleeding in the brain, burns on his back and injuries to his face, according to an autopsy.

After the suffocation, Wofford carried her son's lifeless body to the shelter's front desk. Emergency personnel could not revive him. Wofford later told police that she laid on top of the boy when he wouldn't take a nap.

All of Wofford's children, ranging in age from 1 to 7, had spent time in foster care in Ohio.

Wofford gave birth to her seventh child July 5 while awaiting trial.
