Dear Readers:
Angellika angel

Northwest Guidance and Counseling, the company that owned the facility where Angie died - Rice Lake Day Treatment in Rice Lake, WI - continues to operate their 12 other facilites under the same guidelines as those that were used at Rice Lake - including the use of deadly restraints. We need your help! Please read on ...

Attention
Northwest Guidance and Counseling is the company that ran the facility where Angie died, Rice Lake Day Treatment Center.

Sentencing for the facility and the man who killed her was scheduled December 27th but was postponed until early March. We have a little time left to have our voices heard. Please take a moment to learn what you can do to see to it other children are protected.

Rick and Jo Pelishek
Child and family advocates, Rick and Jo Pelishek, are working with CAICA and others to seek justice in Angie's case and to stop the use of deadly prone restraints. We are concerned about the children remaining in NW's 12 facilities and believe they are at risk. It is up to us to act now so these children will be protected. Further, it is our hope the facility will be shut down while they provide proper training for their staff and make the recommended changes.

Many people have been affected by the death of Angellika "Angie" Arndt - both directly and indirectly. If you or your family have been touched by her story, or have a story of your own that you'd like to share, Jo Pelishek wants to hear about it.

Jo's hope is to gather these stories and show that Angie's case is not an isolated one and that her death has had a profound impact on many lives.

Click on the link below to learn what really happened to Angie the last day of her life and to see what can be done to make a difference in the lives of future children. We need to see to it this does not continue to happen to children. Others have died since Angie's death in the face-down prone restraint position, and if something is not done more will likely die.

Let us all be a voice for those who no longer have a voice - because together, we can and do make a difference!

Help us pave the way to a brighter tomorrow for all children!

Sincerely,

Dear Readers:
Joey and Cynthia new

IN MEMORY OF JOEY!

One year ago - February 4, 2006 - Giovanni "Joey" Aletriz lost his life at Summit Quest, a residential facility in Ephrata, PA. As we saw in the Martin Lee Anderson case, no one answered Joey's cries for help when staff beat him then placed him into the face- down prone restraint position that killed him. Martin and Joey are not alone - many other children have died this way. Lack of proper staff training and the use of good old common sense are to blame in most of these deaths.

Joey's mom spent the past year trying to survive the loss of her son. As hard as it was she has made it through all of the holidays and is now ready to fight for what is right. She wants justice for Joey and she wants to make a difference for future children. CAICA has committed to helping her achieve her goals.

Joey's attorney
Friday, February 2, 2007, just two days before the anniversary of Joey's death, Peter Karoly, was killed with his wife in a plane crash. Peter was Joey's family's attorney - and more importantly - he was their friend. He had a passion for Joey's case and wanted to see to it that justice was served. Others in his office will take over and see to it all of his hard work will pay off in this case. He and his wife will be greatly missed by all those who knew them.

Though Joey no longer has a voice he did want to be heard before he died. Here is part of what Joey wrote just two days before he died:

"I figured out there are some factors to my fear. Some are being wronged, hurt, threatened, death (myself and others) and being harmed. It really sucks having a lot of fears, because mine turn into anger. But see out of all these fears ones is the strongest, and of course it is death."

James White, another boy who was at Summit Quest with Joey, died there less than two months earlier.

(Click on Joey's picture for his journal entries.)

I wrote a poem of what I believed were Joey's last thoughts - his mom agrees. She shared it in her local newspaper.

Joey and mom
Joey's mom has created a memorial website for Joey so people can share their feelings and thoughts. They can light a candle and view the slide show. The song "Tomorrow" helps give hope for a brighter tomorrow for other children. (Click on picture for website).

CAICA has prepared a Blog in memory of Joey "Joey Aletriz: One Year Later". Read about what happened to Joey, see pictures of him when he was a little boy, and learn more about this industry. (Click on link below for Blog).
Attention
There are simple things people can do to help. CAICA will continue to update "ACTION ALERTS" on the website, so please check often to see if there are ways you can help. Something as simple as writing a letter can make a difference. (Click on "exclamation" point for Action Alerts).
