JEFF BERRYMAN

ADVOCATE OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER 2006

“All the evil in the world begins with evil done unto children” J. Berryman

Those of us who have received Jeff’s e-mail alerts for years are familiar with his personal motto:

"When I mount my horse, all the windmills in Spain tremble."

For nearly ten years Jeff Berryman has been advocating for children who have been abused, neglected, and who have died in residential treatment programs including behavior modification programs, boarding schools, boot camps, to name a few.

Why does he do this? Jeff never attended a program and he never personally knew anyone who had.

He has been motivated by pure moral outrage! Jeff told CAICA, “All the evil in the world begins with evil done unto children. It's what creates the Hitlers and the Stalins, the Khomeinis and the Bin Ladens, the wife-beaters and the child-beaters, and all the other messed up people who make life miserable for all the rest of us.”

Co-advocate, Sue Scheff, was sued by the corporate giant, World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools (WWASPS), in an attempt to silence her when she spoke out about the abuse her daughter endured in their program.

Jeff was added to that suit after it was filed, and the evidence WWASPS presented was so flimsy that the judge threw out the case and the appeals court affirmed the judge’s actions. Jeff said he considers it to be a blatant misuse of the legal process to suppress political dissent and a flagrant violation of his civil and constitutional rights.

Thank you, Jeff, for your continued dedication and hard work.
