Manslaughter conviction in autistic boy's death

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A state health aide was convicted by a jury of manslaughter today in the death of a 13-year-old autistic boy.

Thiry-6-year-old Edwin Tirado, along with another aide, was taking Jonathan Carey and another teen on shopping errands around the Albany area when Carey died Feb. 15. Prosecutors say Tirado restrained an unruly Carey in the back of a van, and the boy stopped breathing.

The men then ran errands and returned to O.D. Heck Developmental Center in Niskayuna. Carey was pronounced dead at a hospital an hour later.

Thirty-3-year-old Nadeem Mall, who drove the van, pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in July and agreed to cooperate in the case against Tirado.

Mall is serving six months in the Albany County jail. Tirado's sentencing is scheduled for December 14th.
