"Danielle's Garden"

July 12, 2007
By Isabelle Zehnder

Danielle Gruskowski lost her life because staff failed to dial 911 when she was in distress. Robin Turner, Danielle's aunt, has worked for years to pass a bill that would require all facilities to call 911 in the event of an emergency. Through her diligent work, and the work of others, Danielle's Act was enacted.

Today was an emotional day for Robin. She and her family members attended the agenda meeting in Carteret to present the Danielle J. Gruskowski scholarship award to this year's recipient.

This is something Robin enjoys because, as she said, "it always brightens my heart to talk about Danielle and let some of the citizens know what an outstanding community member she was."

Mayor Dan said he met with Senator Menendez in DC last week and that Danielle's Act is "on the move and will serve as a reminder across the country ..." But he didn't end there ... he said that in Phase II of the waterfront development in Carteret, a garden (park) is being dedicated to Danielle and it will be called "Danielle's Garden".

He said that in four to six weeks they are planning a dedication in the garden in Danielle's memory. The family and guests took a ride over to the waterfront where the park will be.

Robin said, "It was absolutely beautiful, it was so big I couldn't believe it. It has pathways and along the path are statues of children reading books, playing, and a fountain in the middle, engraved benches, and flowers all over the place...and even though it is not near completion, I couldn't help but ball my eyes out and think to myself it was the most beautiful sight I ever saw! It truly touched my heart. Thank you for your friendship & your support."
