Son abused at Dozier: Father reaches out for help

Father needs help to expose his son's abuse in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice - Read boy's diary exposing abuse

Justin Caldwell, an 18-year old boy, has been incarcerated in the Florida Juvenile Justice System since he was 13. What was to be a 12-15 month stay in a residential treatment center to help Justin turned into a 5-year nightmare.

Restraint death of Jonathan Carey

Jonathan Carey, an autistic boy who was a resident at the O.D. Heck Developmental Center, was restrained in a van while staff were running errands. Though he was clearly having difficulties breathing they continued running their errands for another 1 1/2 hours. When they returned to the facility emergency crews were called. The child could not be revived. The two staff are being charged in his death. Jonathan was also abused in another facility in 2004. His parents have been fighting to have his records unsealed so they can find out what happened.

In Memory of Kerry Layne Brown, Jr.

Kerry Layne Brown’s mother, Terry Cameron, speaks out about her son’s abuse at the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools (WWASPS) facility Tranquility Bay in Jamaica: “They lied … they flat out lied to me. They abused my son and lied. They gave me the impression it would be like a vacation.

 In Memory of Matthew Goodman
Matthew Goodman was born on March 4, 1987. As a toddler he was diagnosed with autism. At age nine Matthew was placed at a NJ residential program, where his family believed he would receive a good education and appropriate therapy and for which Matthew's local school district paid over $300,000 a year.

In September of 2000 Matthew was placed in arm restraints to control his behavior. A helmet similar to a hockey mask was later added. Against the protests of his parents, Matthew was made to wear these restraints during the day and often during the night. In addition to the mechanical restraints Matthew was drugged with medication.

 Randall Hinton arrested
In January 2007 the Director of Royal Gorge Academy (previously known as Royal Peak Academy), Randall Hinton, was arrested on multiple counts of third-degree assault and for reckless endangerment - a felony. Hinton was seen on tape admitting to pepper spraying a teen, Kerry "Layne" Brown, multiple times per day for eight or nine months. Kerry Layne Brown died June 6, 2006.

Attention Staff: A call for help
CAICA has received reports that staff members who work in residential facilities and programs for children and teens have been asked to sign an Employment Agreement stating they cannot talk about what goes on in the facility and that if they break confidentiality they will be sued for large amounts of money. We have contacted government officials and legal professionals for their advice and have done our own independent research. We have concluded this is simply a scare tactic that will not hold up in court.

Staff members who work or who have worked in residential facilities and programs for children are mandated (required) by law to report child abuse and/or neglect they witnessed there. There is protection for people who report child abuse. Remember, it is not only your moral obligation, but it is your legal obligation to do so.

Joey Aletriz: One year later
The one year anniversary of Joey's death is upon us and justice has not, in any way, been served. The people who killed him have, to date, gotten away with it "in the name of treatment." Just a month and a half before Joey died at Summit Quest Academy in Ephrata, PA, James White died there. Two deaths in less than two months should raise some serious red flags yet nothing has happened and the facility remains open.

 3 Missing Pregnant Teens

Three teens are missing from New Hope Maternity in American Fork, Utah. They hit the director over the head with a frying pan. I don't condone this behavior but I think I might know why they did it.

 Restraints that Kill Kids

Though I would like to write about the boy Joey was, about how everyone loved him, and about how much he wanted to get better and lead a normal life, I feel compelled to write about what really happened to Joey Aletriz and how his mom feels about it.

Ban Shock Treatments and Aversives on Children
Shock therapy is being used on children at the Judge Rotenberg Center in Canton, MA. While most people oppose its use and have moved to have it banned, few parents strongly support its use for their children. Many people oppose its use, saying it is inhumane and some children were shocked for very minor infractions
